"To know the character of a community, I need only visit its cemeteries." Benjamin Franklin.
WELCOME TO THE SOUTHAMPTON TOWN CEMETERY PROJECT
In 2004 the Town of Southampton began a study of the ten historic cemeteries owned by the Town. The information that has been made available on this website is currently limited to these cemeteries, but at a future date the approximately forty privately-owned, family-owned and Native American burial sites will also be invited to participate.
This website allows a researcher to search for a particular grave by using the name of the deceased, date of death and/or a keyword inscription; however, deaths occurring within the last fifty years will not be shown here based on NYS law. When a search is successful, additional data found in the 1931 Daughters of the American Revolution survey and the 2004 database obtained through the University of Pennsylvania with a photograph and an exact location of each stone is also retrieved. Additional links are supplied for associated searches for the user’s convenience.
It has been a long process but well worth the time spent to provide public access to the valuable information collected in the Cemetery Study and in turn to elevate the community’s awareness of the treasures we have a responsibility to preserve.
On behalf of the Town of Southampton I would like to thank the Hampton Bays Historical & Preservation Society for bringing together key representatives of our community to create the Cemetery Task Force and to Dr. Henry & Barbara Moeller, Brenda Berntson, Rose Cuffee Eleazer, Monica Freeman, Elizabeth & Dick Haile, Zach Studenroth and Roger Tollefsen for serving on the Task Force and contributing their valuable time to this important project.
Our history guides our future,
Sundy Schermeyer, Southampton Town Clerk
